Behind the Print: Race Day

A multitude of threads weave race day into the iconic fabric of the bluegrass. The sloshing of mint juleps in pristine cups, the whirl of beautiful dresses around every corner, the sunshine ricocheting off the paddock to envelop each patron in a warm welcome, and the cacophony in the stands when the horses leave the starting gate, only preceded by absolute quiet moments before. This whimsy exists in a world between tradition and history, where the race itself remains the same, yet the result never is. And isn’t that the magic of it all? A horseshoe-shaped signature on the track honors all those who came before and all those who have yet to experience it.

We have quite an infatuation with signatures, with the monogram being the signature of the south, and our logo derived from a vintage signet ring decades ago. As we approached our rebrand, we experienced an identity breakthrough, realizing the opportunity to create genuinely signature artwork — something seasonless, emblematic of our roots, and something that looks picture-perfect from every angle.

Enter our founder and designer, Sherri, with a fragment of a fabric she had fawned over nearly 10 years ago. One thing you should know about Sherri is that she obsesses about textiles, to the point of hyperventilating (in a good way). The origin story of this fabric is a throwback to a different time, post-divorce, when she had to pick herself up by her bootstraps and nail down her grocery trips to the dollar, a savant of wants and needs. Alas, besides her boys, another thing that brought her insurmountable joy was antiquing. And on one fine day, there it was. This fanciful fabric, in four panels, and she just needed one. A sum of $80 later, that panel was hers. After that day, she saved more money to return and get the rest of the quadriptych, yet they were gone, but that was quite alright; at least we can say that now.

We utilized every single scrap we could, fully committed to the bit — maximizing this resource at our disposal, until it struck us that we had the potential to elevate our project even further, transforming it into something distinctly our own and enhancing its quality in the process. Enter @katlynannart, our artist in residence, whose extraordinary talent completely reimagined the original fabric, resulting in the truly exclusive and remarkable House of Henry version you see today. This is just the beginning, and we invite you to stay tuned as you expect even more magic coming soon…
